MONTEREY, Calif. - Frances Rossi's music store has been at the same Downtown Monterey location for over 70 years. "It is usually peaceful. Just people coming to the bank to do their business, people coming here for music lessons, people walking. It's a fairly quiet neighborhood," said Frances.
That's why Frances was shocked to hear a double stabbing happened just across the street. At a Bank of America parking lot. Police said the suspects claimed to be Nortenos from Watsonville, the most popular gang faction in the city. A fact that doesn't sit well with Frances. She is not only concerned for her safety but what it could do to her business and others during a busy tourist season.
"Parents might not want to bring their children here," said Rossi.
The music story isn't the only business in the area either. There are at least 6 businesses around the parking lot the stabbing happened. And some of those businesses said if these violent crimes continue they are afraid it will also affect their businesses.
Monterey Police said they are not taking Sunday's incident lightly and are still investigating. Watsonville Police are also involved. For Frances it's scary to think that something so violent could happen just steps from work, but perceptions die hard and she hopes Monterey's stays intact.
"I would hate to have people focus on that. This again could be just a passing occurrence. I would hope that this is not going to happen again," said Frances.
