U.S employers added 163,000 jobs and the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.3 percent in July, according to the monthly Bureau Labor of Statistics report released Friday.
July's job growth was at its fastest pace since February. But, that doesn't help the 12.8 million Americans who still remain unemployed, a number that is essentially unchanged since last month.
The Bureau of labor Statistics report shows an increase in employment in leisure and hospitality and food and drinking places. Jobs rose in those areas by 29,000 over the month and by 292,000 over the past 12 months.
Manufacturing and health care also continued its positive trend. Manufacturing added 25,000 jobs with nearly all of the increase in durable goods manufacturing, while health care added 12,000 jobs.
These numbers show a small glimmer of hope for the economy. In June, the economy added only 80,000 jobs, but the unemployment rate was lower at 8.2 percent.
