'Super Mom' Sea Otter Dies

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif.- The Monterey Bay Aquarium announced Thursday the death of a well-known female sea otter who was known among staff as the "super mom."

Officials said the 14-year-old sea otter was euthanized Wednesday in the aquarium's animal health lab because of old age.

"Joy" raised a record number of stranded sea otter pups - many of which have returned to the wild and are now raising pups of their own.

In a bit of good news, another sea otter, found back in 2009 covered in oil off the Central Coast, is pregnant.

The Department of Fish and Game went to give "Olive" her otter check up and found out she's expecting.

Olive is about four months along and in great health.
