Monterey has Plans to Keep Their Tourists in Downtown Area

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif. - Historic downtown Monterey could be seeing a few changes in the near future.

"Alvarado is our historic downtown. It's the main street of our downtown community. We want it to be a place that residents and visitors want to come and spend their time," said Kimberly Cole, planner with the Monterey Planning Commission.

The Monterey Planning Commission has several plans in the works for Alvarado street.

Mucky Duck bar and restaurant owner Anthony Buich said it makes for a positive feel in the area.

"It'll be more attractive to people who walk down here and kind of stay. Rather than people that drive down here, park run and run out," said Buich.

Alvarado may be headed for a change in direction as well, literally. The commission plans to change three major one way streets to two way. Alvarado, Franklin and Del Monte would be opened both ways.

Gaspers Jewelry owner, Gasper Spadaro said the change would bring more traffic and more foot traffic to downtown.

"Two ways is going to attract a more broader type of retailer and/or merchant that would come downtown," said Spadaro.

And businesses are up for anything that is a plus for business.

"Anything that is going to bring new businesses downtown is going for a plus," explained Spadaro.
