Denham Plastics Bounces Back

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. - If it wasn't for the burnt pile of rummage, you would never know this Denham Plastics warehouse was even here yesterday afternoon. The fire is out but the work is not done for firefighters who were on scene until 2 this morning.

Fire Captain Tom Oconnell told me the cause of fire is still under investigation and will take longer because of all the burned materials inside they have to sift through. "It was a little bit more difficult because the building had to be torn down because it was inherently unsafe," said O'connell.

As for Denham plastics, it may have been a big explosion, but it didn't knock them down for long. "We're back in business, we're ready to go, we've already shipped loads of products today," said Mike Hutchings, Co-Owner of Denham Plastics.

Thats all thanks to the support of local businesses, who lended a helping hand by giving Denham Plastics forklifts and office space. Congressman Jeff Denham released a statement today "thanking businesses for their rapid response."

The Congressman visted the site over night after getting in from Washington D.C., but has since left. Deham's business partner Mike Hutchings doesn't know the exact cost of damage yet but told me this is not a huge setback for them. But Denham Plastics is counting their blessings thankful that no one was hurt during the fire.

"Our main, main concern is that our employees were safe and sound. You know, they're like family to us. We're just relieved about that," said Hutchings.
