Multiple Resources Brought in for Warehouse Fire

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- Multiple Resources Brought in for Warehouse Fire. Many of the crates in the lot where the fire started are made of wood or plastic and are close together. Firefighters we spoke with said if multiple departments didn't show up as quickly as they did, more structures could have easily burned.

The fire happened around 4:30 p.m. at a warehouse on Abbott Street near Sanborn Road in Salinas.

Firefighters on scene already had a game plan for the others who showed up. They brought in 40 people from Salinas, North County, Monterey Regional, Aromas, Spreckles and Fort Ord.

Battalion Chief Herb Shoemaker says their goal was to keep the fire contained in the lot it started in. "So our strategy was to set up a defensive line to keep the fire and flames away from the other properties," said Shoemaker.

The fire came only 20 feet away from a neighboring warehouse. Every time there's a fire like this crews bring in more people because they always anticipate a tough fire fight, and with budget cuts across the board these departments are used to working together. "Right now staffing is short and we do rely on each other a lot more than we ever have. We have mutual aid agreements. We have automatic aid agreements set up for situations just like this," said Shoemaker.
