6 Year Old Survives Hit and Run

Posted: Updated:

CASTROVILLE, Calif - "I was playing with my friend Junior and then I didn't see the car and it went that way and I went that way. I flew into the bushes and he ran over my two legs," said 6 year old Paul Hernandez.

Paul and his Mom are still shaken by what happened Saturday night. It started like any other, Paul playing football in the front yard of his friend's house. "We were very scared, I just got home from work and the neighbors came around the corner screaming that he got hit," said Carissa Bravo, Paul's mother.

Paul was hit by what officers think was a 17 year old drunk driver running from police. Witnesses said the driver drove through a pole and mailbox, hitting the boy who was playing on his friend's front yard and making him land over 10 feet on some bushes.

After crashing into two cars the driver drove into a fence and flipped the car. Paul's Grandfather didn't know what to expect as he ran around the corner when he heard the crash. His worst fear about Paul being hit was true. And now Dave Huetta is mad at police for pursuing the suspect through a neighborhood. "They are much to blame as the driver was, because they kept on with the pursuit and that's not right," said Huetta.

We called California Highway Patrol to ask why officers decided to continue the chase and are still waiting to hear back. Paul said that last thing he remembers is feeling the heat off of the car's engine. "It really, really hurt," said Paul.

Even though he's going to have to get used to using crutches the whole family is thankful he is alive.

The suspect, who officers think was under the influence, was taken to a hospital, no word on his condition yet.
