Local Teen One Step Closer to the American Dream

Posted: Updated:

SEASIDE, Calif - Here on the Central Coast, educating illegal immigrants about President Barack Obama's new plan to stop deporting teens is already underway. One girl who has lived in fear since she was brought to the United States at the age of two says she feels one step closer to achieving the American dream.

"It feels good because we don't have to worry about getting deported or anything, we can study and do what we came here for and make our parents proud of us," said Kenia Camacho.

Kenia is a typical 16-year-old high school student; the only difference is she entered the US illegally when she was two.

"Basically, I've lived here all my life, I haven't been to Mexico for like 10 years and this is the only place I know and I consider it my home," said Kenia.

Since she was little Kenia and her family have lived in constant fear of being deported. At times, Kenia wondered why she was even going to school. "I thought it was a waste of my time because either way I was still going to end up working at a restaurant," said Kenia.

President Barack Obama's new immigration plan to keep teens from being deported gives Kenia hope that she can finally change things for her family. Kenia now plans to go to college to be a physical therapist and legally work in the United States.

"We're going to be able to study and get everything that my parents didn't get or accomplish," said Camacho.

The Camacho family has also hired an immigration lawyer who is helping them gather the documents needed to qualify for this new immigration plan.
