SEASIDE, Calif. -- Cal State President Pay Hikes. The salary hikes come as the board looks at tuition increases, enrollment reductions and other budget options. Three CSU presidents, including one that worked here on the Central Coast are looking at a 10% hike all making over $300,000.
Some Cal State University are not happy after the university announced major pay hikes to three new university presidents. Staff we spoke with said there's a major disconnect between the faculty and the administration. "We thinks its not a good idea to take the money that they could be spending on students and faculty and directly on the education that this university is responsible for," said Steven Levinson.
The extra money going toward the president's pay hikes is money from the university's foundation funded by private donors. Both Cal State Monterey Bay's interim president and former president, now moving to Cal State Northridge are part of the group getting a raise.
The Presidents' tax based salaries will stay the same. CSU Office of the Chancellor's Spokesman Michael Uhlenkamp said the extra pay keeps the schools competitive in finding top administrators."CSU presidents, these employees in general are paid less than their counterparts outside the state of California. So in order for us to be able to recruit those individuals we need something beyond the fact that they're going to be working for California State University," said Uhlenkamp.
Even tough these presidential pay raises are being paid for by the foundation, the teachers at this school believe that money could be better used elsewhere for example in the classroom or bringing in more teachers. "I mean some of the raises they've already approved could pay for a full time faculty members," said Levinson.
Teachers and staff at CSUMB say the administration should focus on the increasing tuition costs before giving out money to administrators. In the last three years tuition has gone up for Cal State by about 30%.
