SALINAS, Calif- A bird that was caught in the North Salinas neighborhood of Bolsa Knolls has tested positive for West Nile Virus, said the Mosquito Abatement District for Monterey County.
This is the first evidence of West Nile Virus in Monterey County since 2009.
Now that the bird has tested positive, officials will begin setting traps to catch and test mosquitos in the area. The Monterey County Health Department encourages anyone who believes they have spotted mosquitos or birds in that area to contact them.
WEst Nile is transmitted to humans and animals through a mosquito bites. Mosquitoes become infected when they feed on infected birds.
"Warm weather promotes the breeding of mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus," Monterey County Interim Health Officer Dr. Lisa Hernandez said. "While no predictions can be made about the severity of West Nile virus this season, Monterey County residents should take precautions to protect themselves from mosquito bites by applying insect repellent and eliminating all sources of standing water around their homes."
In order to help identify West Nile activity, Californians are encouraged to report all dead birds and dead tree squirrels to www.westnile.ca.gov or call toll-free 1-877-WNV-BIRD (968-2473).
