SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -- Santa Cruz police have recovered 10
bikes they believe were stolen in the last month, and authorities are trying to
return them to their rightful owners.
"In Santa Cruz last year, we had on average one bike stolen
a day. We set a record, about 365 were
stolen," said Santa Cruz police crime analyst Zach Friend. "One of the things that we like to do is get
bikes back to their original owners."
According to the Santa Cruz police blog, the following bikes
were recently located during various theft investigations:
1)
Ironhorse – Comp – Black
2)
Kona – Dew City – Black
3)
Cruiser (unknown) – Yellow
4)
Schwinn – Cruiser – Red
5)
Trek – 6000
6)
Scott – Blue and White
7)
Felt – Black
8)
Giant – Black
9)
Gary Gisher – Black
10) Trek – 7300 – Black
Friend said bikes that are stolen are often left unattended
and unlocked for a short period of time.
Even so, a lock won't necessarily deter a determined thief.
Sitting in downtown Santa Cruz next to his locked bike on
Monday afternoon, Henri Chetel said his bike has never been stolen, but it
happened to his friend.
"She had it locked up and they stole all of the parts off of
it," said Chittel. "When she went to get
them replaced, it was like $1,200 for the parts and that was almost twice the
cost of the bike originally."
If you believe your
bike is one of the 10 recovered by Santa Cruz police, please call Sgt. Perry at
(831) 420-5820. You will be asked to
provide proof that the bike is yours.
Police said referencing a police report number for investigators would
be ideal.
