SALINAS, Calif -Taylor Fresh Foods is set to begin construction on a new building in old town next month. It won't only be a draw for more shoppers in the area but the local ag giant said it's leaving room for more businesses to come.
This is the first time were getting a look at the new blueprints. Taylor Farms is hoping to build additional space inside their new building for smaller mom and pop shops. Right now the parking lot in Oldtown Salinas is usually empty but building plans for a four story, 97,000 square foot building on Main Street is in the works.
Salinas Assistant Development Director Alan Stumpf said it's been a long time coming to have good news like this. "It will have three more levels of commercial offices, one level of commercial retail on the ground floor and we'll have a below grade level of parking," said Stumpf.
The final number of smaller stores inside the complex hasn't been decided. Mayor Dennis Donahue said it's the first step to expanding more business in the downtown area, and Taylor Farms will be the anchor for bringing more businesses in. With more business means new jobs. "We anticipate that there will be about 200 new workers coming with the Taylor headquarters to move to downtown," said Stumpf.
Right now the city is reviewing the plans for the project and developers said the building will fit in well. "I think we have the entertainment part of downtown covered pretty well, the cultural and visitor with the Steinbeck center and this really focuses back on business," said Stumpf.
The new building set to be complete next fall. Construction is slated to begin in about a month.
