Santa Cruz Man Returns From Colorado

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -Lynn Dunton returned from helping hundreds of families devastated by these fires tearing through Colorado.

He started volunteering for the American Red Cross seven months ago and this may be his first deployment, it may also be one of the most important.

"It was a valuable, great experience. The fact that all these people came together, people were very supportive of each other."

Dunton says he learned a lot and some of it could help the Central Coast

"Right now, Colorado is a lesson for us right at the moment."

While there are ways to prevent wildfires, he knows there is only so much you can do.

"Preparing the fire defense tactics, keep it clear of brush and trees, so if a fire does come up it wont go straight to your house."

The Red Cross chapter in Santa Cruz has sent 21 people from this area to disasters all across the country.

Dunton spent two weeks in Colorado and fire fears even forced volunteers like him to move 50 miles away from the danger. While Dunton calls the trip a great experience, it is also mentally and physically exhausting.

"It gives you a chance to experience what its like. But the emotional and actual physical understanding, its a different experience than just hearing about it."
