Man Escapes Shark Attack, Kayak Gets Bit

Posted: Updated:

PLEASURE POINT, Ca. - A shark, thought to be about 15 feet long, attacked a kayak on Pleasure point off Capitola Beach this morning, but thankfully the man inside escaped unharmed.

The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office says the 52-year old man, from Fremont, CA, was fishing a quarter mile from Pleasure Point in Santa Cruz when a shark came from below, lifting the kayak and attacking the front end of it.

Deputies say the man was in 40 feet of water just outside a kelp bed.

He fell out of the kayak, when nearby boaters plucked the man out of the water before the shark could bite him as well.

There is no definite answer as to what kind of shark it was.

The Sheriff's Office says sharks are common around the area, but usually stay in deeper waters and are not a threat to humans.
