Del Valle gun shop owner Ray Parga is no stranger to fire arms. He's been around them his whole life. His father was a police officer and remembers being taught gun safety an early age.
"He took the curiosity out of it. Going out to the range, shooting a tin can something like that, can of soup, or a watermelon. And its like Whoa! and he's like yeah, that could be a person. From then on it was like, no, dont touch," said Parga.
And he relays the message to his customers.
"One of the first things I ask is whether they have kids in the house. Because that's going to be one the big factors," said Parga.
Parga is also a reserve police officer in Del Rey Oaks. He said all law enforcement follow the same California gun laws as everyone else. And state law said any new gun must be sold with a lock, if it's a used gun, you are required to buy one.
Parga said there are different kinds of locks for different kinds of guns but the point is once you use it, you stop the gun from working. Parga has thee big 4 gun rules every owner should know posted on his walls. And now he makes sure his kids know them at a young age. But he knows accidents can always happen even when you're careful. And said if kids are too young to teach them how dangerous a gun is, then just put it completely out of reach.
"With little kids, just lock it up. If you got a CCW or your off duty, lock it up. It is a pain, but its more pain if you have to bury your child," said Parga.
