Update: 3-Year-Old Son of San Jose Police Officer Shot and Killed in Gilroy

Update: 12:30: Santa Clara County Medical Examiners Office has identified the shooting victim as 3-year-old Preston Orlando.

GILROY, Calif. -- Gilroy police detectives are investigating the shooting death of the 3-year-old son of a San Jose police officer.

The boy was shot with a handgun at a home on the 7500 block of Kentwood Court at about 5:00 on Thursday evening, according to police.  Emergency personnel immediately began to treat the boy for his life-threatening injuries, but he was pronounced dead on the way to a local hospital.  Police said family members were home when the boy was shot.

Police said the Santa Clara County Child Death Protocol was activated to investigate this incident.  The circumstances surrounding how the boy was shot are currently being investigated by Gilroy police, the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office and the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office.
