MONTEREY, Calif. - "Registered voters here in Monterey may find a letter, petition and return envelope in their mailbox tomorrow."
The Monterey Peninsula Taxpayers Association has taken the next step in stopping what they are calling a tax by the Water Management District.
"Beginning tomorrow, we will mail letters to all registered voters in the Monterey Water District demanding the right of the people that are going to have to pay the tax to vote on it."
Ron Pasquinelli has been a leader of the MPTA for over 30 years and he says the fight over water has gone on long enough.
"10,000 parcel homeowners protested the new fee and the water board just blew them off. That's just not right!"
We spoke with the water management district, which said it was surprised and disappointed. But even with this petition, official say the only choice is to proceed forward.
Pasquinelli says he knows water is going to be expensive but people should get a vote.
"They will have two choices, drop the fee or put it to a vote."
The petition has spaces for seven registered voters to sign and send back before the July 27 deadline to put a referendum on the November ballot.
And Pasquinelli says this all boils down to one fundamental question.
"The basic question is water management has been in business for 35 years and has spent millions of dollars and the question is still where's the water?"
