SANTA CRUZ, Calif- Smoke and flames could be seen coming from an office on Chanticleer Avenue Thursday night. An employee at the business told dispatchers that he heard fireworks going off around the time he saw the fire on the roof.
Neighbors tried to extinguish the fire with a garden hose but it would not reach, said firefighters.
After getting on the roof, firefighters discovered a fire on the interior of the building as well. While firefighters from the Central Fire District attacked both fires, deputies helped to evacuate tenants from surrounding buildings.
The fire was in a building that produces art glass and had several kilns in use. According to the business owner, all of the equipment had been shut down at least an hour prior to the fire being reported.
After the insurance inspector came to check out damages, owner Chris Johnson said, "he determination was made that it was in all likelihood a bottle rocket."
