MONTEREY, Calif. - Some July 4th parties will end a little differently with lasers in the sky, and Monterey will be a part of that trend that is gaining momentum.
"Lasers have that kind of effect, but not it's a different kind of o-o-o. it's more like an a-h-h."
In a small town, north of Santa Rosa, Windsor, CA is also using a laser show to help celebrate the holiday. In addition, Modesto, just south of Stockton, also cancelled fireworks for lasers.
Some places are doing it for risk, others for cost like Monterey's case.
"If you cut back on the fireworks and add other elements, you've reduced the risk and increased the opportunity for the crowd to just go crazy for it."
A laser show costs about $10,000 compared to the $200,000 show that Monterey cut in 2009.
