Castroville, Calif. - Businesses and apartments in the state are now required to recycle after a mandatory commercial recycling law went into effect Sunday.
This affects about 470,000 businesses and apartments in California.
Under the law, the mandatory recycling law includes businesses that generate four cubic yards or more of commercial sold waste per week, and all multi-family residential dwellings with five units ot more, regardless of the amount of commercial waste generated.
The affected businesses represent approximately 20 percent of the state's 1.3 millions businesses, and are responsible for about 75 percent of the commercial waste in California.
Here on the Central Coast, Monterey County is working with Waste Management to provide help to businesses in their recycling efforts. Monterey County is offering free education to employees, free waste assessment to assist businesses implement successful recycling plans and follow-up visits to ensure plans best practices.
