One Central Coast Park Gets a Make-Over

SALINAS, Calif.--One Central Coast Park Gets a Make-Over. On Saturday community members celebrated the completion of La Plaza Rotario at Closter Park in Salinas.

It's one of the busiest parks in the city and in an effort to decriminalize the area, donors gave more than $420,000 for the park to make it more appealing to visitors.

A new Mexican-style kioko and fountain was added. Repairs were also made to the park's boxing and tutoring center. During the park reveal community members spoke about the need to keep parks like this one up and running in Salinas.

Salinas Rotary Club President Brett Harrell says he's pleased to see all of the work and help from the community come together."We bought brand new computers for the tutoring center and new furniture in there to make it a more welcoming place for their physical activity and for them to study. Have a safe place for study," said Harrell.

Sally Closter-Oakes' grandfather owned a farm on the property and was the one who decided to turn the land into a park for children. Some of his own kids got to be at the revealing of the refurbished park on Saturday."This is a huge project, a huge undertaking and they've done a marvelous job," said Closter-Oakes.

Salinas Mayor Dennis Donohue, rotary members and the Closter family also spoke at the event.
