Neighbors On Edge After Deadly Salinas Shootout

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS - Police said she didn't pull the trigger, but today Noemi Hernandez is facing murder charges in connection to her own brother's death.

Investigators told Central Coast News the deadly shootout on Thursday night was all over an unpaid debt.

A day after the deadly shooting happened inside of a home on the 1400 block of Teton Avenue, investigators were still on scene trying to piece the crime together.

Neighbors who live just doors down said they're frightened something like this happened in their neighborhood.

"Very concerning. Very, very, very, because it's just getting out of hand, really. There's no stop to it," said Victor Bojorquez.

Today, Bojorquez is keeping a closer eye on his two girls.

They were at the park feet away when they heard police sirens.

Minutes later, the neighborhood was blocked off with crime tape.

"This is a quiet street," he said. "This never happens on this side of town."

"I was really scared because usually we have kids playing around here all the time," said Lisset Navarro, one witness.

Investigators said Juan Hernandez, and several other people, walked into a house on Teton Avenue to collect a debt.

Police don't know what happened next, but someone started shooting.

Hernandez died in the house and two other people ended up at the hospital.

"I just saw a man running down that way and suddenly the cops just showed up and taped down the whole street," Navarro said.

Jose Sebastian was one of the victims, but police are now calling him a suspect in the deadly shootout, and Hernandez's sister, Noemi Hernandez.

Police don't think either of them pulled the trigger, but are somehow connected to the crime.

"She was in the group of people that went over to the house and we believe based on statements that we've received that they were going over there with a specific intent to commit a crime," said Terry Gerhardstein, commander for Salinas Police.

As police continued to collect evidence, Bojorquez is thankful no innocent victims were caught in the middle.

"The bullets don't stop where they're expected to be stopped at. They keep on travelling. It's pretty sad," he said.

This case is far from over.

Salinas Police officers are still collecting and processing evidence and interviewing witnesses.
