SALINAS, Calif. - While most of our local firefighters battling the Waldo Canyon Fire are from Santa Cruz, the fire is also hitting close to home for one woman on the Monterey Peninsula.
Janise Harris lives in Monterey and can only pray her sister stays safe from the massive flames.
Tricia Harris lives in Colorado Springs, just a few miles south of the fire.
"But if I look out in the distance right now, it's a brown, dark haze over the sky. It looks like almost an atomic bomb went off."
Tricia says she hasn't seen any of our local firefighters but people around the area are calling them heroes.
