Posted: Updated:

Santa Cruz, Calif. - A new study finds the already endangered California condors are exposed to harmful levels of lead.

The study was led by environmental toxicologists at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

According to the study, ammunition is the principal source of lead poisoning.

Experts say that without a solution to the lead poisoning problem, the condor population can only be helped through costly management efforts.

The findings of the study can be found in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
