SALINAS, Calif - Salinas Police arrested two drivers during a dui checkpoint Friday night.
According to Salinas Police, officers screened 625 vehicles and arrested two dui alcohol suspects at their checkpoint at North Main Street and Iris Drive between the hours of 6:15 p.m. and 11:00 p.m. Friday night.
One of the two suspects was also charged with child endangerment when officers discovered three children under the age of 11 in the vehicle with the intoxicated driver.
Officers also issued 10 non-alcohol related citations.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, checkpoints have provided the most effective documented results of any of the DUI enforcement strategies, while also yielding considerable cost savings of $6 for every $1 spent.
Salinas Police will be conducting another dui checkpoint and dui saturation patrols during the Independence Day holiday week and weekend.
The checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
