The State Assembly passed a bill Monday that would keep the responsibility of fixing broken sidewalks off of homeowners.
It may be a big deal in Salinas, where the city is working on millions of dollars worth of sidewalk complaints.
The city lists a "Do-It-Yourself" plan on its website. That plan includes specifications and standards that have to be met if homeowners want to make their own repairs.
Starting July 1st, homeowners can also volunteer for a "50/50" program. Repair funds, up to $2,500, that residents pay out of pocket will be matched by the city.
But, state lawmakers said repairing the sidewalk shouldn't be a homeowner's responsibility in the first place.
Assemblyman Felipe Fuentes proposed AB 2231. The bill would also remove liability from homeowners if someone tripped and fell outside their home.
The 50/50 program, offered by Salinas, is voluntary for homeowners.
AB 2231 now goes to the Senate.
