HOLLISTER, Calif. -- Hollister police want residents to be on the lookout for a white pit bull mix
that attacked a young girl last weekend.
Police said it happened in the area of Jan Avenue and Gabriele
Court on Saturday when the young girl was walking
with her father to their mailbox. The
dog bit the young girl's arm and the father grabbed the dog to try to get his daughter free. The pit bull mix then turned on the father,
biting his hand and leg.
"The victims received moderate injuries and are being
treated at an area hospital," police said in a news release issued Monday.
"It's really scary," said Shayna Crawford, who lives at the
corner of Jan and Gabriele. She has a
young son and said she is thinking twice about letting him play outside.
"Stick him in the backyard or inside, and not just really
running around the street," said Crawford.
Monday, a police officer returned to the cul-de-sac, seemingly
looking for more clues. One neighbor
said police asked him if he had seen a blood trail. Crawford and other residents on the block
said Animal Control has been a near-constant presence since the attack on
Saturday.
Hollister police are reminding everybody that they should
not approach unfamiliar animals or strays.
It's unknown if this particular dog is a stray, but if anybody sees it,
they should call 911 or Hollister Animal Care & Services at (831) 636-4320.
