Teen Awaits Supreme Court Decision for Sentence

Posted: Updated:

WATSONVILLE, Calif.- Watsonville man, Christian Speaker, will wait until next month to know his fate. In February, he admitted to shooting store owner, Ya-Ya Ahmed, during an armed robbery. Speaker admitted in hopes that the plea guilty would give him leniancy when the judge decides his sentencing.

Both attorneys will wait for the verdict of two similar cases, that are being heard by the US Supreme Court.

Professor, Stephen Wagner, at the Monterey College of Law, gave Central Coast News his insight.

"Superior court in Santa Cruz is obligated to consider pending cases or await the outcome of US Supreme Court cases, especially in this case, cause the outcome could impact the way juveniles who are being treated like adults plea."

Wagner explains how more and more juveniles are committing crimes like these and that it is the right decision because the law is unsettled in this area. Speaker will appear in court again on July 20.
