Monterey Brings Back Big 4th of July Celebration for 2012

MONTEREY, Calif- The city of Monterey is planning a whole day of festivities this Fourth of July. Bringing back an old tradition and hopefully starting a new one.

"This Independence Day ushers in a new era of public-private partnerships to create and produce a Fourth of July for our families to enjoy," said Mayor Chuck Della Sala. "The City of Monterey and the City Council are grateful to the downtown businesses and the Monterey Bay Symphony for bringing back old traditions and starting new ones."

 

A U.S. Navy Seal jump team will parachute onto Alvarado Street at 10 a.m. to kick off the Independence Day parade. The parade route consists of the entirety of Alvarado Street starting at Pearl Street; making a left on to Del Monte Avenue up to Calle Principal. The parade turns left on to Calle Principal and ends at the intersection of Pearl. Spectators are invited to view the parade from the parade route sidewalks of Alvarado, Del Monte and Calle Principal. The parade is sponsored by the Old Monterey Business Association, Union Bank, and Santa Barbara Bank & Trust.

 

Big Little Backyard BBQ: 11 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

Entertainment for all ages is on tap at the City of Monterey’s Big Little Backyard Bar-B-Que and Entertainment Extravaganza held on the historic grounds of Colton Hall on Pacific Street. Non-stop live music plays on two stages. Bands include the Monterey Community Band (11:00 a.m.); The Money Band (12:00 p.m.), with #1 hits from the 50s to today; The Coats (1:30 p.m.), a Seattle-based A Cappella harmony group; and Pop Fiction (3:00 p.m.), a San Francisco-based party band. Children's entertainment includes free carnival booths and games, face painting, jump houses and balloon artists. Lots of great food for sale is provided by non-profit food vendors all day, or you can also bring a picnic lunch. Please leave your dogs at home and note that this is an alcohol free family event.

 

Patriotic Concert and Laser Light Show: 8:15 – 9:30 p.m.

 

The Monterey Bay Symphony presents the first-ever Patriotic Concert and Laser Light Show at Jacks Park at 8:15 p.m. Creative Laser Media and Design (www.creativelasermedia.com ) will provide a full scale production that will be choreographed to the live music performed by the Monterey Bay Symphony Brass Ensemble under Conductor and Musical Director Dr. Carl Christensen.

Gates open at Jacks Park at 6 p.m. Seating includes bleachers and outfield lawn seating for picnics/ blankets or lawn chairs. A full concession will provide a variety of delectable foods, beverages and treats.

Capacity at Jacks Park is limited to 3,000 people and admission is free with a ticket. Tickets are available at the Colton Hall lawn party – and at the gate.
