Budget Agreement Almost Reached. With time running out Governor Brown and top democrats say they reached a budget agreement.
Nobody's giving specifics about the deal that should be voted on by Tuesday. Democratic leaders say it makes big changes to several government programs. The biggest impact will be felt by people already struggling, Welfare recipients.
Right now if you're unemployed and qualify you can collect Welfare for 48 months but Thursday's deal cuts that in half to 24 month.
Governor Jerry Brown and top democrats must reach a compromise. Both sides said they have and while they're not saying much about it, we know parts of Welfare are in jeopardy as well as subsidized child care. Monterey County Department of Social and Employment Services Director Elliot Robinson says he's worried about how much the budget cuts will hurt families. "In particular to grants to children are not being reduced by 27%. However, what the reductions to welfare-to-work service is that built into the agreement between the governor and the legislature are reductions in services to parents," said Robinson.
There is some relief, people living in counties with unemployment higher than 10 percent won't be hit as hard. "Its hard to say it's a relief because this county we still have deep child poverty and family poverty and high unemployment so its hard to hear parents are still going to have reduction in the support they need to get and find work," said Robinson.
Cuts to funding for public colleges would also be cut. Nothing's final and a vote is expected by Tuesday.
