SOLEDAD, Calif- Salinas Valley State Prision officials are investigating the cause of the riot that occured Tuesday morning around 11:10am at one of the maximum-security officials.
According to investigators, 159 inmates were involved in the riot which was finally ended by guards using pepper spray and "less-than-lethal force options."
18 inmates suffered stab wounds, slash wounds, and head trauma injuries. One inmate had to be airlifted to a local hospital. Another ten were taken by ambulance. Seven inmates were treated at the prison's medical facility.
One prison staff member was injured while responding to the riot, but not by inmate.
The facilty is on modified program pending an administrative review into the cause of the riot.
