State Firefighters May Soon Be Furloughed

Posted: Updated:

SACRAMENTO - Gov. Jerry Brown wants state firefighters to take one unpaid day off every month.

The move is expected to save the state $6.5 million a year.

If firefighters pass it, it won't be implemented during peak fire season and it's not expected to slow response time.

Something homeowners hope that's true.

"if a devastating fire came this way, I would be very concerned about service. However, I believe that we need to have a balanced budget at the state level. I don't think we should just target certain agencies," said Robert Cuva, who owns a home near Salinas.

If the furloughs go through, this would be another sacrifice for fire crews.

The union said it already reduced staffing from four firefighters on an engine to three during last fire season.

The furlough schedule will be staggered so firefighters are always available and at the station.

Other firefighters will remain on call.
