Deadly Plane Crash Victim Identified, Had Heart Condition

SALINAS, Calif - The Monterey County Sheriff's Department says a pilot who died in plane crash at the Salinas Airport June 1st suffered a heart condition.

According to deputies, the victim, Charles Russell Westcott of Carmel had to be identified through dental records and  died of coronary artery atherosclerosis.  

Westcott, 73,  suffered no antemortem injuries in the crash. 

On June 1st, Westcott crashed his homemade Prowler Jaguar at the Salinas Airport. Firefighters were already at the airport when the crash happened around 11 a.m. and were able to put the fire out within minutes.

Miguel Alvaranga witnessed the crash and said, "He was really high and then he came all the way straight down, then I heard this explosion."

Friends told Central Coast News  Westcott loved flying the plane that took him years to build.  "He loved being in his hanger and on his plane. It was his home away from home," said Mark McBride
