MONTEREY, Calif.- New information on a proposed water rate hike on the Monterey Peninsula.
You have until Tuesday night to turn in your letter to fight the 8% water fee hike on your property taxes.
Central Coast news talked to groups opposed to the water fee said so far 12,000 letters are in from peninsula property owners, essentially people's "no vote."
They need 15,000 letters by Tuesday night to stop the water management district proposal.
Opponents said the proposed plan attempts to force property owners, not all ratepayers, to pay the water fee.
Water district general manager Dave Stoldt said water rates are going up no matter what because of new projects that need to be implemented since the state told Cal-Am to reduce pumping from the Carmel river.
Stoldt said the district is directly involved with Cal-Am to get the alternative water projects going, and needs the $3.7 million to make it happen.
If you think there is a better way to impose the fee, you need to vote "no" by writing a letter and physically delivering the letter.
You can do it one of two ways.
If you drop the letter off before 7pm Tuesday June 12th:
Monterey Peninsula Water Management District Office
5 Harris Court, Building G, Monterey
If it's at or after 7pm Tuesday, go to the public hearing:
The Hyatt Regency Hotel
1 Old Golf Course Road, Monterey
