Runoff Needed for Two Supervisor Seats in Monterey County

Posted: Updated:

Salinas, Calif-- The counting is just about done and there's still no winner.  The  candidates needed to capture more than 50% of the vote to win a seat on the Monterey County Board of Supervisors.

But nobody was able to do that in Districts 1 and 5.  That means the top two candidates in each race will have a runoff in November's General Election.

In District 1, incumbent Fernando Armenta got 1,346 votes (44%) compared to Salinas Councilmen Tony Barrera's 927 votes (31%) and Sergio Sanchez's 756 votes (25%).

Ballots from all 20 precincts in District 1 have been counted so it appears Armenta will face Barrera in a runoff.

Over, in District 5, on the Monterey Peninsula, former Supervisor Marc Del Piero is giving incumbent Dave Potter a run for his money.  The men are seperated by less than 1,000 votes.  As of early Wednesday morning Potter had 6,078 votes (43%) to Del Piero's 5,919 votes (42%).  However, more than 2,000 people voted for Pacific Grove Mayor Carmelita Garcia and that prevented any of the candidates from getting 50%.

Potter will face Del Piero in November's runoff.
