Volunteers Needed to Patrol Fort Ord Bike Trails

Posted: Updated:

"Happy trails to you!" A local group works everyday to keep that motto alive.

Tom McKay's come pretty close to walking up and down every one of the 83 trails on Fort Ord's public land.

He's a volunteer patrolman for the Bicycle Equestrian Trails Assistance, or BETA.

He helps the Bureau of Land Management enforce trail etiquette.

There are unspoken guidelines for horseback riders, bikers, and hikers to make sure everyone gets along on the trails.

"Horses are big animals," said Tom McKay. "They're prey animals. So, when bicycles are around they think they're going to eat them."

The group members say they need more eyes and ears out on the trails. Patrol members help make sure visitors are leaving the wildlife how they found it.

"There are always a few folks who are simply so self interested that they just don't seem to want to interact positively with other folks," said McKay
