Man Arrested Twice in 24 Hours for Stealing Car

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif - Salinas Police arrested a man twice in less than 24 hours for trying to steal two cars Thursday.

According to Salinas Police, around 2:40 Thursday afternoon Steven Esquilito, 22, walked into the yard at  California Towing And Transport on the 1000 block of Harkins Road and tried to steal a truck parked in the yard with the keys in the ignition.

The owner of the tow business heard the truck start and saw Esquilito trying to drive away. Esquilito had never driven a manual transmission truck before and was having difficulty shifting. The truck coasted to a stop while Esquilito was grinding gears in the yard. The owner was able to pull Esquilito out of the truck and detain him until Salinas Police Officers arrived.

Just 24 hours earlier Esquilito was released from the Monterey County Jail after posting bail for trying to steal another car. He is now back in  Monterey County Jail for stealing a vehicle and committing a felony while out on bail for a felony.
