SALINAS, Calif - Salinas Police arrested a known Norteno gang member for trying to steal a young girls bike and punching a teen boy in the head Monday.
According to Salinas Police, Sergio Antonio Ruiz, 21, was near Salinas High School on South Main Street when he forcibly stopped a 15-year-old-girl, a freshman, as she was riding her bicycle, and tried to steal it She was able to get away with her bike.
Ruiz then went onto campus and approached two more student victims, a 17-year-old boy and a 16-year-old boy. He tried to punch the boys but they were able to escape unharmed. He yelled gang slogans during the attack.
He next approached a 16-year-old male victim on the north end of the campus and robbed the boy of his cell phone and punched him in head.The young man was not seriously injured.
Police officers later found Ruiz lying on the grass of the Steinbeck Library with the stolen phone. He was positively identified as the suspect by all victims. Ruiz resisted arrest but was quickly brought under control by officers and booked in Monterey County Jail.
