SALINAS, Calif - A former police K9 officer was rescued by the Monterey County SPCA after he was found severally emaciated.
The five year old German Shepard named Ingo was seized from the home of a former Watsonville officer on February 17th, said the SPCA. The dog's hips and ribs were prominently showing and there was no food in the backyard reported the SPCA Humane Officers.
X-rays revealed Ingo's stomach was filled with what appeared to be sand or dirt and he only weighed 55 lbs when he was rescued. An average adult male German shepherd of his size should weigh 80 to 90 pounds, said the Monterey County SPCA.
The Monterey County has District Attorney's Office has filed charges against Francisco Ibarra, a former officer with the Watsonville Police. He faces 2 misdemeanor counts of neglecting the care of an animal. One count is for Ingo, and another for a 12 year old shepherd that was rescued in September 2011.
He will be arraigned on April 18th to answer to the charges.
