Thousands of college students Occupy the Capitol

Posted: Updated:

SALINAS, Calif. -- More than a hundred sleepy-eyed Hartnell College students boarded buses Monday morning to join thousands in a massive rally at the state capitol protesting the rising cost of higher education.

Holding signs and wearing shirts decrying state cuts, students said they were heading to Sacramento to tell legislators they were tired of fewer class offerings and skyrocketing tuition and fees.

"Fund our education," said Hartnell student trustee Juan Gutierrez.  "That's all we need.  We need our schools open year-round, keep our classes available and keep our schools funded."

Buses departed early from other Central Coast campuses, including UC Santa Cruz, to ensure students were in Sacramento by mid-morning.  The protest began with a march at 10:00 a.m. at Southside Park and continued with "nonviolent direct action training to Occupy the Capitol!" in the afternoon.  The protest website said the Occupy the Capitol action will be peaceful -- and it adds, "How long we stay will be up to you."

Monday's demonstration follows similar protests across the state last week.  Last Thursday, students at UC Santa Cruz prevented vehicles from entering campus and built a temporary tent university to call attention to higher tuition and rising student loan debt.
