Occupiers Face Vandalism Charges

Posted: Updated:

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.- New information on the people arrested for taking over an empty building in Santa Cruz last year.

Tuesday, four people police said were involved in the takeover, were in court. Bradley Stuart Allen, Franklin Alcantara, Grant Wilson pleaded not guilty to tresspassing, conspiracy, and felony vandalism charges.

Robert Norris Kahn didn't enter a plea, and is looking for an attorney.

The building on River Street is still empty, but it's a reminder about the Occupy movement in the city.

While it may seem like the protesting has quieted down, the protestors are not going away.

The court house steps look much different today than they did just a few months ago.

San Lorenzo Park is also getting a face lift, patches of re-seeded grass are starting to grow back and fill in spots the city said Occupy campers ruined.

But the orange fencing remains; a sign that not so long ago, the park and part of the courthouse was taken over by Occupy Santa Cruz.

The River Street is now surrounded with chain linked fencing, standing guard against future damage.   Eleven people are charged with causing that damage and besides spending a possible three years behind bars, if convicted they also will have to pay the $35,000 in damages.

If you think you can't see them the Occupy movement is over, you're wrong. In fact their Facebook page is talking about having a tent city right here on the lawn of UC Santa Cruz's campus March 1st.

And as of a week ago, Occupy protestors take turns manning the courthouse steps.

But life goes on in Santa Cruz and in a couple of weeks, city parks and rec crews will take down the fencing and the park will re-open to the public again, occuipers and all.

The people arrested for occupying the vacant building are scheduled to be in court in March.
