MARINA, Calif.- New information about a bunny problem on the Central Coast.
Central Coast News started telling you about it last year and the problem keeps getting worse. Bunnies are being dumped all over the place and ending up at shelters in Monterey County.
Ten more were left at the Salinas animal shelter last week.
"Over 100 rabbits were trying to keep track of," Lisa Redmond is a volunteer with Rescue Rabbits Rock through Animal Friends Rescue Project in Pacific Grove she is the rabbit rescuer.
"We're teaching the shelter more about them and how to care for them, but they do call us immediately," said Redmond.
She's started about three years ago and never saw so many rabbits at one time in her home.
"Space, where to put them? We've got to get them out of the shelter, the shelter cannot take care of this many rabbits they have dogs and cats galore, rabbits are third on the list."
One of the major problems is the rabbits being dumped aren't the kind you would see out in the wild, these animals being left behind were definitely bred to be pets.
"They don't know the day the mom gives birth she can get pregnant again that same day, and then four weeks later we've got more and more...We have had reports from people who've seen rabbits being sold out of the back of cars and outside pet stores and a lot pet stores still sell baby rabbits and they're not spayed or neutered."
All the rabbits rescued over the past few months have been spayed and neutered, but now it's a matter of finding good homes before time and money runs out to care for them.
"I do now have some volunteers that are awesome. We need more."
