SALINAS, Calif. -- Gas stations in Salinas are packed, and drivers like Filipe Vave know why. He drove a good 20 minutes from Marina to Salinas, not for work, not to get home, but to fill up his gas tank.
"Horrible, I hate it. Iit's just going up, especially when the economy is very bad. So we got to drive all the way out here just to get gas, it's just terrible," said Filipe Vave, Marina Resident.
It wasn't like Vave wanted to drive out here, but prices are so high on the peninsula he chooses to spend his time driving, instead of on gas.
"Yeah, I mean the gas prices over here are cheap, but out there it's horrible. It's like almost 5 dollars, like seriously it's horrible," said Vave.
The prices on the Peninsula are not a pretty sight. Some start at $4.15 and keep getting higher. While prices in Salinas were lower Monday, we found one woman changing the prices at the Arco on Sanborn. What used to be $3.75 for a gallon of regular is now $3.78.
We talked to gas stations to find out why gas is cheaper in Salinas. Some said it's the location, others said it's based on zoning areas, meaning it has to do with how much money the city brings in. For Vave, he and other out-of-towners are happy they could save some extra cash.
"I save 40 bucks, compared to out there," said Vave.
We also found out more folks are limiting how much they drive to save cash.
