SALINAS - An overwhelming amount people came to Alisal High School in Salinas today with concerns over how to start saving for college.
With tuition hiking 8 percent in the last year, people didn't waste any time trying to get all the answers at the most recent Cash for College event.
March 2 is just around the corner, which means there's only less than two weeks for students to apply for financial aid and Cal Grants.
With tuition continuously going up, that has families scrambling to get the help they need.
"It's very hard," said Donna Levey, whose daughter is planning for college. "I'm not a college graduate and I don't want her to struggle the way I struggled throughout my life."
Without a college degree, she said it's been hard financially to make ends meet in life.
She brought her 16-year-old daughter Grace Azevedo to the event to give her the opportunity for a brighter future.
"Times are hard," she said. "I work part time and I just want her to be able to get the education and hopefully get a good job in a career and not struggle so hard like I had to."
Azevedo is a junior at Aptos High School and is already thinking seriously about college.
She and Levey made their rounds to dozens of university representatives and organizations to get information on applying for help.
"I came here to see what I can do to get myself through college to see what kind of help I can get," she said.
More than 100 people turned out for the event.
It was organized by Assemblymember Luis A. Alejo.
