GILROY - Toll booths may be added to Highway 152 outside of Gilroy.
Farmers off of the highway said they're concerned because it's vital to his business
"We use a lot of trucking, so I'm sure it would probably drive the cost up of shipping our products out of the area," said Peter Van Dyke, farmer at Van Dyke Ranch.
He grows and ships fresh organic fruits, including apricots, cherries and nectarines.
He said the possibility of adding a toll to the already busy highway will affect his business big time because he ships his fruit across the state and the country.
"I'm sure that's going to drive the transportation costs up for us and they're already high with fuel," he said.
That means there's a good chance the cost will then be passed on to you.
San Benito, Santa Clara, merced and madera partnered up to to see if adding tolls to 152 is possible and worth it.
The money would be used to expand the highway from two lanes to four.
They said it will relieve traffic congestion and make the trip from the central coast to the central valley safer, but Van Dyke isn't buying it.
"Anything that interferes with the flow of free enterprise is not really good for the state of California," he said.
