WATSONVILLE- As concerns mount over the use of Methyl Iodide, the pesticide used on many strawberry fields, the California Strawberry Commission is busy working on alternatives.
CSC President Mark Murai said they've be testing fumigate alternatives since the early 90's.
A research plot in Watsonville is the home to rows upon rows of experimental strawberries. Each strawberry row gets its own dirt and alternate component.
Examples of the test trials are: laying down rice, coconut core, mustard seeds and even steaming the dirt to try to rid the soil of pathogens.
Murai said this is cutting edge research and hopes to one day be able to offer a solution on a global level.
