LOMPOC- Starting from scratch is a good thing!
Thanks to the School Food Initiative and some hard working school cooks new school food has arrived in elementary schools in Lompoc.
Buena Vista Elementary is now one of two schools in Lompoc offering made from scratch school food.
On the menu today, mac and cheese made special with whole grain pasta, celery, onion, and fresh garlic.
New food served in a new school kitchen. Last year, school food was delivered and reheated in plastic.
The Orfalea Foundation stepped in through the School Food Initiative granting a major kitchen remodel and new equipment. They also give support in the form of easy recipes and training so that the program is sustained.
When offered a choice, we found children pick the new healthy pasta almost four to one over the frozen school pizza.
"I didn't think they would pick the healthy food right off the bat! I'm very surprised and very encouraged!" Kathy Bertelsen, the Lompoc Food Service Director
"As a mom, I can't tell you how exciting it is to see such enthusiasm for healthy eating! I have seen children gobble broccoli in Goleta, devour fresh local kiwis (The skin and all!) in Santa Maria, squeal with delight over squash in Solvang and jump for joy over a salad bar in Lompoc! Students give an overwhelming thumbs up for the healthy new school food!" Jennifer Mandulay, Central Coast News Reporter
