SALINAS, CA - Monterey County's Board of Supervisors have voted to support a ban of methyl iodide use statewide, after hearing public testimony on the issue Tuesday morning.
United Farm Workers member and supporters, as well as agriculture officials for Monterey County filled the Board of Supervisors hall.
Methyl iodide is a known carcinogen that can cause spontaneous miscarriages and contaminate groundwater.
Those opposing it say injecting it as a gas into the soil presents unacceptable risks to farm workers, nearby rural communities, pregnant women and children.
