Monterey, Calif-- CBS News confirmed Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney was at the Portola Hotel & Spa moments before it was evacuated. Romney's campaign said he was at the hotel earlier in the morning but was already at the airport when it was evacuated around 10:30 Monday morning.
The chemical spill forced everyone out of the upscale resort and sent about 30 hotel workers to the hospital. Officials blame cleaning crews who mixed ammonia and bleach for the scare.
The Monterey County Hazardous Materials Team contained the spill. The hotel let guests and employees back in just after 3pm.
