UPDATE: Monterey Hotel Re-Opens after Hazmat Scare

Posted: Updated:

MONTEREY, Calif- More people have been taken to the hospital after an accidental chemical spill in the basement of the Portola Plaza Hotel.

Crews said 30 employees and 1 guest were transported to the hospital after complaints of symptoms. Some of the symptoms of chlorine gas are coughing, nausea and vomiting, and fluid in the lungs.

The Monterey County Hazardous Materials Team contained the spill. The hotel let guests and employees back in just after 3pm.

The leak occurred when some employees were mixing chemicals in the basement Monday morning. The hotel ventilation system was shut down so the toxic chlorine gas would not spread to the rest of the hotel, said officials.

Hundreds of people were evacuated as a precaution.
